Many college athletic programs are regulated by an athletic association. These associations were founded to establish rules on recruiting, eligibility and financial aid. Shown below are the major athletic associations.
NCAA - National College Athletic Association (874 schools are members of this association). The NCAA was founded in 1906 and consists of three membership divisions(Division I, Division II and Division III).

Freshman who want to participate in a Division I or Division II program must be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse was established to ensure consistent interpretation of NCAA requirements.

NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (490 schools are members of this athletic association). Freshman need to be certified by this association to be eligible to participate.
